Using plants to remediate or manage metal-polluted soils: an overview on the current state of phytotechnologies

چکیده

Soil contamination by metals threatens both the environment and human health hence requires remedial actions. The conventional approach of removing polluted soils replacing them with clean (excavation) is very costly for low-value sites not feasible on a large scale. In this scenario, phytoremediation emerged as promising cost-effective environmentally-friendly technology to render less bioavailable (phytostabilization) or up metal-polluted (phytoextraction). Phytostabilization has demonstrable successes in mining brownfields. On other hand, phytoextraction still few examples successful applications. Either using hyperaccumulating plants high biomass induced accumulate through chelator addition soil, major bottlenecks remain, mainly extended time frame remediation lack revenue from land during process. Due these drawbacks, phytomanagement been proposed provide economic, environmental, social benefits until contaminated site returns productive usage. Here, we review evolution, promises, limitations phytotechnologies. Despite commercial operations, there have significant advances understanding phytotechnologies' main constraints. Further investigation new plant species, especially tropics, soil amendments can potentially basis transform into an operational metal clean-up future. However, at current state art, phytotechnology moving focus technologies pollution attenuation palliative cares.

A Critical View of Current State of Phytotechnologies to Remediate Soils: Still a Promising Tool?

Phytotechnologies are often shown as an emerging tool to remediate contaminated soils. Research in this field has resulted in many important findings relating to plant and soil sciences. However, there have been scant private and public investments and little commercial success with this technology. Here, we investigate the barriers to the adoption of phytotechnologies and determine whether it ...

Use of phytoremediation and biochar to remediate heavy metal polluted soils: a review

Anthropogenic activities are resulting in an increase of the use and extraction of heavy metals. Heavy metals cannot be degraded and hence accumulate in the environment, having the potential to contaminate the food chain. This pollution threatens soil quality, plant survival and human health. The remediation of heavy metals deserves attention, but it is impaired by the cost of these processes. ...

Using poly-glutamic acid as soil-washing agent to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils.

The extraction efficiency of heavy metals from soils using three forms of gamma poly-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) as the washing agents was investigated. Controlling factors including agent concentrations, extraction time, pH, and liquid to soil ratio were evaluated to determine the optimum operational conditions. The distribution of heavy metal species in soils before and after extraction processes w...

Genetic engineering in the improvement of plants for phytoremediation of metal polluted soils.

Metal concentrations in soils are locally quite high, and are still increasing due to many human activities, leading to elevated risk for health and the environment. Phytoremediation may offer a viable solution to this problem, and the approach is gaining increasing interest. Improvement of plants by genetic engineering, i.e. by modifying characteristics like metal uptake, transport and accumul...
